I was very fortunate to have completed filming a video series in the Kimberley in mid-December 2022, literally days before Cyclone Ellie decided to make a brisk left turn from the top end and into the catchment of the mighty Martuwarra Fitzroy River.
You could feel the tension in the air that something big was coming - an eery stillness and a scorching heatwave - hitting 48 degrees. So hot, the tar on the Great Northern Highway was melting.
What resulted was one of the most severe floods in Australian history - with Fitzroy Crossing and nearby communities underwater, and sections of the Great Northern Highway, including the Fitzroy Bridge, destroyed.
